MakeToys: Quantron

 I have been ranting and raving about Quantron to anyone who will listen to me for the last seven months, so it’s time, as this year winds down and I try to finish half-written articles that have been languishing on my flash drive since the summer, to give this figure some attention.

MakeToys MTCM-03E: Sonicdrill

 Again, AGAIN, TFSource is advertising the entire MakeToys Quantron set for super cheap, $110 this time for Black Friday, and AGAIN this set me on a rant in the presence of my poor, beleaguered wife about how excellent a set of figures these guys are, and how everyone should buy them. That made me realize that I hadn’t finished writing them up, and had in fact been neglecting Sonicdrill. So, let’s rectify that, shall we?

MakeToys MTCM-03D: Overheat

 

Overheat is the MakeToys take on Afterburner, and is, along with Celeritas, the most radical departure from the original G1 Technobots in terms of appearance. Afterburner turns into a futuristic motorcycle, while Overheat transforms into a light bike from Tron. But the alt mode isn’t the only grand departure from the original: the robot mode is also very different looking.

MakeToys MTCM-03C: Metalstorm

 

 

Ok, so. It’s been a while since we’ve spent some time on a converting robot action figure, and it feels like that should change.

Metalstorm is the MakeToys Scattershot, the largest figure in their excellent Quantron set. He is by far the largest figure of the team, something which at first makes the other four figures seem much too small, until one looks at it from the G1 perspective, after which point all is just fine. Metalstorm will have a lot of work to do, as he converts from robot to spacecraft to armored spacecraft to armored robot to torso; but not, as the G1 version did, that strange cannon tower, although certainly with enough applied creativity, said additional conversion could be fan moded. Initially, he seems to be the least impressive figure of the five, but given time ends up being really satisfying and fun.

MakeToys MTCM-03B Celeritas

Celeritas is the second in the line of the MakeToys Technobots, and presents a really different and pretty exciting take on Lightspeed, who was always arguably the lamest and least interesting of the G1 team. In Lightspeeds’ Dreamwave More Than Meets the Eye bio, it is mentioned that Lightspeed dreams of giving up his future space car alt mode in favor of some kind of flying alt mode; see, Lightspeed is so dull that he doesn’t even want to be Lightspeed.

MakeToys MTCM-03A Blindfire

 Blindfire is the MakeToys version of Technobot Strafe, and is part of Quantron, the MakeToys version of Computron. Attained in February thanks to a great online deal, Blindfire and his teammates have had to wait a pretty long time to get any attention, thanks to the moving of Coffin HQ. But now, they are finally freed from their boxes, and can get some attention both in hand and in writing.

Transformers: Unite Warriors Computron

Right now, I’m unsure about a lot of things. Things aren’t making sense the way they should. I don’t know what to do, or where to start doing things I that I know I need to do.

So I figure Unite Warriors Computron might be a good review to work on. This review is long overdue, as this isn’t even a new release any more, having been in my possession since September. I don’t know, even as I sit down to write this, how I want to proceed: should I do individual figures; should I just do the whole thing as a whole? I didn’t know; I don’t know even as I sit to start working on it. I think I’m just going to wing it. I'm just going to sit down and try, because that is how I figure things out.

Unite Warriors Computron is another entry in the long list of toys in the “That Figure Will Never Happen” Hall of Fame. Like two years ago, a Combiner Wars Scattorshot was announced at SDCC, and the idea immediately took hold that Combiner Wars Technobots were on the way. By Botcon of that year, Hasbro had denied this idea, citing the ever accurate, iron clad “No Plans At the Moment” defense. Naturally, a portion of the fandom took this to mean Never. Of course, there are two Computrons on the market currently.
