Hello again, Coffin friends,
About a week ago, I made a post announcing some new features
I was hoping to add to the Child Sized Coffin; one of them was a fairly
ambitious music project wherein I’d take on an entire discography by a single
band. After some deliberation, I am pleased to make the following announcement:
A new feature is coming to the Coffin! Entitled the MASS
BURIAL, this new column will focus on reviewing an entire discography from a
single band.
In order to qualify for this treatment, a band must have at
least four full length albums, and ideally (although this is negotiable) no
more than eight full length albums. EPs and split albums will be included on a
case by case basis, dependent on the band up for review: if these releases are
of particular importance or relevance, or if they compose a large segment of
the overall output of the band, they will be included; live albums, unless
particularly noteworthy, important, or as matters of personal preference, will
be excluded entirely. Discographies will be reviewed in chronological order,
and albums will not be excluded just because the reviewer does not like them
for some personal reason. In order to be considered, it is preferred that the
band be one already at least somewhat known to the reviewer; however, we will
review new or previously unheard bands as well, given enough time to
familiarize ourselves with them so as to feel confident in the reviewing.
Reviews will be posted individually, but will all be
similarly tagged so as to hold the set together. Our goal for the present is to
try and put a few of these entries together each year: rather than set the
Coffins’ musical focus on whole catalogues, we want to maybe do one of these
Mass Burials each season, or about four per calendar year. We are already well
underway on the first one, and so for now, enthusiasm and confidence are both
running very high; but it is a time and attention consuming undertaking, so we
may not be able to get a second one together before the end of the year. But we
are certainly going to try. We are open to suggestions for discographies to review; just leave a comment of send us an email.
For the inaugural Mass Burial, the Coffin will be looking at
the career of Swedish death metal band VOMITORY. We reached this decision in
the most scientific way possible: I gave my iPod to my wife and asked her to
pick something, and she did. Here at the Child Sized Coffin, we strive for
accuracy and legitimacy in everything we do.
